Information For Beginners

Looking for fun ways to exercise and get fit, but still want it to be effective? Capoeira is a traditional fusion of martial arts and dance that’s kicked and flipped its way around the world from South America.

Capoeira can be learned by all age groups and fitness levels. A world away from your aerobics class, Capoeira will give you a cardiovascular work-out, while stressing balance, flexibility, and strength. A typical beginners class is an hour long, and in that time you hardly ever stop moving. Practicing Capoeira produces endorphins which give you a feeling of well-being, you don’t even realise how hard you have been working!

FAQs

What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form, which incorporates acrobatics, rhythm, music, fun, fitness and self-defense in an alternative martial art.

Can anyone do Capoeira?

There are no specific requirements for starting Capoeira. Come along to any of our Beginner classes which are dseigned for people with no or limited previous experience. People of all ages & fitness levels are encouraged to join in our classes.

How do I start Capoeira?

You can start training Capoeira at any time. Feel free to come and watch a class or join in on your first day. All students begin class together (warm-up and basics) and afterward are separated into beginner or intermediate level for training Capoeira movements.

What do I need to bring to class?

Initially for class you should wear comfortable gym/exercise clothes that you can run, stretch and move freely in. Very baggy clothes are not recommended, as we do practice upside-down and spinning movements such as cartwheels and handstands, which can be tricky in loose clothing. Students train either barefoot or with sports shoes on, so bring a pair on the day, and decide which works best for you. For students who train regularly we have a uniform; white capoeiracre pants (Abada) and a selection of t shirts. We ask that you come to class around 15 minutes before the official starting time to allow time for payments and registration.

Where are the classes?

Our classes are held in Coogee & Chippendale in Sydney and in Newcastle.

How much do classes cost?

Casual classes are $20. If you can train regularly and become a member there are monthly payment options for better value.

Membership?

Our Membership fee is $60 per annum, or $35 for 6 months. You only need to become a member once you are training regularly and want to take advantage of our discounted monthly rates for members.

Are there belts and gradings like other martial arts?

Like other martial arts, Capoeira has gradings called Batizados. Any student taking part in a Batizado will receive a new coloured belt (corda), corresponding to the level of skill they have achieved. There are no forms of “katas” (structured sequences) in Capoeira, a mestre will decide when a student is ready to progress to the next level. Usually, beginners can achieve their first cord (yellow/white) within 3-6 months of training.

Good Luck and see you in class!
