Capoerista’s woke up to a beautiful sunny day in Sydney on Sunday for a little bit of Samba and an awesome day for Roda De Rua at Coogee Beach in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs!
Kicking off the day we headed down to the PCYC at Daceyville (Kingsford) for some music practice, a little bit of play, followed by a very challenging Samba class. The amazing Cristina Ramon took on the challenge that was teaching us a samba routine, and if I thought I was un-coordinated before the class, I KNOW I am definitely un-co now hehe… The class was great fun, and it was fun to see everyone give it a go, trying to shake their booties – trying being the operative word for some of us! Our next challenge, possibly our homework, is to remember the little routine we learnt, a challenge for any worthy capoeirista, but with a few more lessons from the lovely Cristina I think we might just get it down.
After our amusing morning of dance, we headed down to Coogee Beach to take part in the Roda event for the day. As usual, the circle of people playing Capoeira attracted a large audience which, were encouraged to take part in the clapping. The crowd that watched down at Coogee were great, and people seemed to really enjoy the energy and craziness of the roda. Although some poor Coogeesider’s looked a little put off by the odd group of people banging drums and singing in Portuguese at the top of their lungs.
I know the first time I saw a roda I thought you all were a little bit crazy!!!
It was great for me to meet some people from some other Capoeira schools from around Sydney, and to see the different styles of play in the roda. It was also awesome to see how well the public in Coogee responded to the roda, but it also made me a little bit shy to jump in and have a play with so many people around
Next time!

I am still amazed every time I see the tricks and flips that everyone can do. It is inspiring to get in there and keep trying to nail the different moves. Patience, time and a lot of bruises seems to be the key, but I’m willing to keep giving it a try!
Thanks everyone for an amazing day and am really looking forward to the Brazilian Drumming with Timbalada this weekend and practicing our samba routine
